Acoustic Emission Systems

Box Elder Innovations builds acoustic emission (AE) test equipment to assess structural integrity of composite pressure vessels and other load bearing structures. In the AE method, the system uses acoustic sensors that "listen" for acoustic emissions during load testing of a structure. The system collects acoustic signals generated from each event and uses these signals to track count vs time and pressure, estimate event severity, and determine event location.

AE data can be correlated between test articles and used to estimate the quality of a given part.

A common application of acoustic emission is testing pressure vessels. By capturing acoustic events while a vessel is being pressurized or under pressure, potential flaws in the vessel can be identified before they transition to a failure.

Acoustic Emission testing provides many potential benefits, such as:

  • Determine integrity and support acceptance of pressure vessels
  • Support qualification of design, material selections, and manufacturing processes
  • Support failure investigations
