What is acoustic Emission testing?
Acoustic emission testing is a nondestructive test (NDT) method that "listens" to the stresses and strains going on in an object. By having multiple sensors the points of origin of any anomalies can be located in an object.
A common application is for testing pressure vessels. By listening while it is being pressurized or under pressure, potential flaws in the vessel can be identified, before they transition to a failure. This is particularly useful in cyclical pressure cycles.
